Dunn family papers, 1854-1977 1854-1916.

Collection consists of approximately 130 letters between relatives of Vincent Dunn, Grayson County, Ky., written between 1854 and 1916. The majority are written to or by his son, Lt. Louis Dunn of Company I, 3rd Kentucky Cavalry Regiment. (USA). Many letters reflect strongly held, contrasting views on the war, secession and slavery. Louis Dunn's letters contain first-hand descriptions of Civil War battles, including Shiloh, Stones River and Perryville, as well as aspects of daily military life. Collection also includes extensive equipment records for Company I from 1864-1865. There is one note, dated 1977, attached to a brief history of the Henry Skaggs family.

Vincent Dunn, a farmer living in Grayson Co., Ky. was born 4 June 1811. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had 5 children. The eldest, Lewis, age 22, joined the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry Regiment (USA) as a 2nd Lt. in October, 1861. He served throughout the war and saw action in several battles, particularly the Battles of Perryville and Stones River. He probably died within a year after the war ended.
